Black XXX-Mas, 1999

February 7, 2008 by Nate

Written and directed by Belgian film-maker Pieter Van Hees, Black XXX-Mas tells a surreal horror story of a hodgepodge of fairy-tales set in a bizarre world that seems at once in the future and in the present.  The overall narrative and plot most closely follows that of Little Red Riding Hood.  Be warned it’s very violent, graphic, and I believe there may be some nudity, so it’s definitely not to be considered safe for work.

In many ways this was the true mainstream break-through for Wes Anderson as a director, though the film maintained that independent spirit that his earlier movie Bottle Rocket made such great usage of. Jason Schwartzman stars as Max Fischer, a character of enormous depth and knowledge, perpetually a creator of clubs and a masterer of hobbies, but also a terrible student at his private school, where he is content to remain for as long as possible.

Scotland, PA, 2001

June 17, 2004 by Nate

In his directorial debut, Billy Morrissette brings us the best adaption of William Shakespeare to date in the world of film: Scotland, PA. Morrissette, also the writer of this movie, effectively adapts the classic tale of MacBeth into the blue collar world of a fast food restaurant in the 1970s. Joe McBeth (James LeGros) and Pat McBeth (Maura Tierney) are a pair of workers in a local fast food restaurant called Duncan’s, but Joe has many ideas for innovations and the pair conspire to murder the owner of Duncan’s when their advancement is stifled and ideas are used by the management.
